I randomly woke up this morning thinking of my teacher from Forest Grove Elementary school. He was such a loving, kind soul. I really enjoyed learning Ukulele from him. Thank you Mr Regier! May your tunes live on in our hearts❤️

One in a million, that’s how I describe Russ. Who except him could get grade 6,7 and 8 boys to sing in a choir and thoroughly enjoy the experience. Both my sons agree he was their favourite teacher. The kindness he showed my disabled son will never be forgotten.

Mr. Regier helped me more than any other teacher. I have cerebral palsy and he found many innovative projects for me to do around the school. I couldn’t play a ukulele but with my sharp hearing I helped tune them. We were very fortunate to have him and Wayne Dyck at Forest Grove School. They practiced inclusiveness long before it became mandatory. My condolences to the family.

I was shocked when I saw this. Mr Regier was awesome. I can remember a few years being able to volunteer my time when I was working towards a bacholar or education and got to teach Phys Ed at Roland Michener school in Saskatoon with him. Can even remember him using the ukele during some exercises in classes he and I taught together.I learned so much from him and I know the hundreds of students he had always told me how great they thought he was. He was a teacher I tried to be more like myself. I also sorry for your loss

Hi Val, Jared and Laura and. your families We were shocked and saddened to hear of Russ’ passing. I always appreciated his interest in and support of RJC. Mostly when I think of Russ I think of the ministry he led with the Bunch of Guys. His influence on the guys in the choirs and the influence of the music in the lives of these adolescents and young adults cannot be measured. It needs only to be accepted as a give from God and a blessing to all of us. I am also very grateful that Russ had the opportunity to have grandchildren. Russ, you have touched many many lives. You were a gift to all of us. May you rest in peace. And may God embrace all of you with his love as you enter a world very different from the one when Russ was with you. God bless all of you. With our sympathies and prayers.

My first memory of Russ was of him at age 16 playing for the Laird fastball team at a tournament in Waldheim. We at Osler had a superior team (so we thought) until Russ got up to bat. He hit a home-run over center field that won the game for Laird and put us out of the tournament. Long ball hitter, Russ was.

Mr. Regier is a teacher you never forget. He was considered family for hundreds of children who were lucky enough to be taught by him. He was a coach in sports, music and life. He taught me to sing, play ukulele and many life lessons. He never stopped teaching. We will miss you Mr. Regier.

Mr Regier was one of favourite teachers. I remember this tall man with massive hands playing his triangle shaped ukulele. His Monopoly money game in school that we kids could earn toward buying things from him. Track practices and competitions at the field house. Mr Regier was always so positive and encouraging to kids that were not always the easiest to teach. Thank you Mr Regier and to your family as well as you shared a great man with some many kids

I was very saddened to hear of Russ’ passing. Mr. Regier was my music teacher and Phys Ed teacher at Forest Grove School, and a later collegue I would see on the track at the field house when I became a track coach myself with Saskatoon Public Schools. I have so many fond ukulele, voyajeur, track, and assembly sing along memories of him. I still sing those songs in my car to this day…my husband is forever wondering how I would ever know the words to Long tall Texan, has anybody seen my girl, and Johnny Cash’s hey good lookin…I always say it’s because of Mr. Regier. He was truly one of the good ones who did everything with a smile. My condolences to his family.

To Val and family. We are saddened to hear about the loss of Russ. Val taught all 3 of our children at Hugh Cairns school and throughout this time Russ would be at the school helping her during concert performances playing all sorts of musical instruments and singing. When Val took her classes to their house for year end field trips he would be there in the yard singing with them again (I’m not sure if he helped with baking pies or not!). He was a wonderful man and we are deeply sorry for your loss. Dean, Carey, Brooke, Tyler and Ami Terichow

“Mr. Regier” was my teacher in elementary school, at Hugh Cairns. Here I am, 40 years later, and I can picture him in my head clear as day. He had a big impact on me, and on my love for music. I still have my ukelele, which I passed on to my kids! He was a very special and memorable man, and I am so sorry for your loss. Vicki Manzo (King)

On behalf of my brother and I, I would like to say thank you to this man for inspiring our love of music. To this day, 30+ years later, I still play the ukulele. And my brother has shared his love of music with his son. A sincere thank you from everyone that attended Hugh Carins for the music and gifts he gave.

When I first met Mr. Regier I got in to trouble. Being distruptive in class or something a stupid 4th grader does. I was in my eyes “unseasonably forced” to fill out a pink sheet about what I did wrong. I thought it was so stupid and that his class was stupid. Who even cared about the ukulele anyway right? It didn’t take long for me to come around. In a couple of classes he became my favorite gym teacher. When we started to play the ukulele he became my favourite music teacher. To this day I still think about the positive effect he has had on me. I think Russ was at our school for maybe four years. In that time he was able to win over the hearts of the entire school. I remember being very sad when he left. When we got our new gym teacher even though we got to play dodgeball again it wasn’t the same. I had the plesure of reconnection with Mr. Regier a handful of years ago. He picked me up from my high school and bought me lunch. I was just surprised that he remembered me, let alone treated me to lunch. We talked about little things. Mr. Regier was a very special man to me, and to a lot of people, but the thing that amazed me is how he was able to make so many feel special.

I tried to look russel up a few times just to simply thank him for everything he did for me as a troubled young kid, I can honestly say I think about him Alot. All the selfless time he donated to the kids. Track meets, music, school assemblies. School dances, the man is a legend, 2 apples two bananas and two sandwiches is what I swear he ate everyday. The songs he taught still echo is my mind and I often find my self singing little parts of songs like “let’s go fly a kite” 5”2 eyes of blue covered in fur diamond rings and all those things” or su·per·ca·li·fra·gil·is·tic·ex·pi·a·li·do·cious among many more, what a wonderful man I’m very saddened to hear of his loss at such a young age. Thanks to the regier family for sharing him with us.

Dear Val, Jared, Jane, and families, sorry to hear of Russ’s passing. I had the privilege of teaching with Russ at Roland Michener in the 90’s and enjoyed it immensely. We played fastball on opposing teams in the late 70’s and early 80’s and it was a mutually respected rivalry. I witnessed the positive affect he had on his students with admiration. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Our love and prayers are with you Val and family. I have never stopped using Russ as an example when talking to our kids, grandkids and others of how you can be a great athlete, a cool guy and still love music and be great at that too. I can remember in grade 12 sitting in one of the RJC piano rooms in the dark with a bunch of football players and Russ playing us current songs and we all singing along. Years later when our daughter Jody was at RJC and needed some high jump coaching, I phoned Russ to ask if he could talk to Jody. A week later Jody phoned to say Russ had come RJC to help her and anyone else that needed help. Sorry, we can’t be there, but know that we are thinking of you as you celebrate Russ’s life.

Our heartfelt condolences to Val, and the entire family, on the loss of your loved one, Russ. Though the years and distance separated us, I remember Russ as an avid athlete and singer from RJC days. Russ passed on his love for volleyball through his daughter Laura, who I have had the pleasure to meet within the volleyball community. Larry and Ruth Ens, Winnipeg

Mr. Regier was my favorite teacher for my entire schooling career. He had a way of connecting with kids on a personal level to make them feel special or of worth. He had a way of extracting the very best efforts out of kids. We would want to give him our best because we knew how much time and energy he gave us, and we wouldn’t want to let him down.

It’s unfortunate that we never did get a chance to catch up after all. Out of all the educators that have taught me over the years, I think Russ made the biggest impact. It’s twenty something years later and I still find myself humming those old choir songs. I will cherish those memories forever. A loving heartfelt thank you to the Regier family for sharing Russell with us.

Mr Regier was truly a special man. I was blessed to have him as a teacher throughout elementary as well as being a part of ukulele club for many years. Mr Regier taught me that there is always joy to be found in creating music and sharing it with others. He appreciated hard work and was always so encouraging, which for a young kid is really important. That was something really cool, Mr Regier always treated everyone like they were valuable, regardless of how old you were. He had such a positive attitude and an open mind. We sang a lot of silly songs in ukulele club and one that always stuck with me was called “have fun”. The words were “have fun, our motto is have fun, or you will miss a life of happiness while you’re young. Remember have fun”. I think that really sums up Mr Regier’s outlook on life. He was such a fantastic man and wonderful role model to have growing up. I am very blessed to have known him.
