Obituary of Annie Peters

May 17, 1919 – January 3, 2014 Our beloved mother, Annie Peters, joined many in her family in heaven, in the early hours of Jan. 3, 2014. She was looking forward to this day and often wondered why God had kept her here for so long. However, she trusted God that he would take her at the right time. Mom was born May 17, 1919 to John and Helena (Schellenberg) Thiessen on the family farm near Aberdeen. It was always a joke that she had been born in a barn, because when she was born her father was building one of the first houses with electricity on their new homestead and they were living in what became the barn when they moved into the house. She was the seventh of 12 children and in a row of 4 girls. Since Grandma did not need all those girls in the kitchen, Mom was very happy to be the one who worked outside. She especially loved caring for the work horses. You would never know that supposedly she did not really know how to cook when she married Dad, Bill Peters, June 10, 1941. She was known as a very good cook and her potato salad and jam jam cookies were legend. Mom was a homemaker devoted to her husband and children. She spent countless hours playing ball and cards with the children and did her work early in the morning and late at night. Two chocolate cakes and multiple batches of cookies were made every week. One year we had so many tomatoes they filled a bathtub to overflowing. She canned them all. Our cellar was a veritable grocery store stocked with all the goodness of the garden. Mom had an enormous faith. During difficult times she would say, “I take my troubles to the Lord and leave them there. I hope you do the same.” She was always cheerful, with a ready smile for everyone. Even at the end as she became more frail and life was very narrow, the hospital staff remarked on how pleasant she was and what a dear to look after. While we rejoice that her suffering is over and she has gone to be with Jesus, we will miss her dearly. Mom was predeceased by her: husband Bill; her children, Ed, Jack, Edith; her parents; her son-in-law Darrell and her granddaughter, Kiera. She was also predeceased by all but one of her siblings and many of her brothers and sisters-in-law. She leaves to mourn her passing her children Alvin (Kathy) Peters, Phyllis (Jim) Goertz, her daughters-in-law Diana Peters and Lisa (Bob) Neudorf, her grandchildren: Elena (Sean Cavanaugh) Gudmundson, Thora (Derek Postnikoff) Gudmundson, Jon Gudmundson, Shane (Lynnell) Peters, Brett Peters, Cody (Maria) Peters, Holly Peters, Levi (Sophie Barbier) Goertz, Tiera Goertz, Jalise Peters, Jasel (Nicole) Peters and 10 great grandchildren. She is also survived by her youngest brother, Bill Thiessen in Chilliwack, sister-in-law Anne Thiessen, brother-in-law Don Jones and members of Dad’s family: Peter Peters, Helen (Keith) McNaughton, Tina Peters, Elsie Peters, Gertie Peters, Mary (George) Thiessen, plus numerous nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held Thursday, January 9, 2014 at 10:30 A.M. at Rosthern Mennonite Church, Rosthen, SK. Interment will take place at Rosthern Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are in care of Funk’s Funeral Home, Rosthern, SK. (306-232-5245, http://www.funksfuneralhome.ca).
