Obituary of Anna Denk

June 18, 1917 – August 25, 2018 Anna Denk died peacefully on August 25, 2018 at the Mennonite Nursing Home in Rosthern, at the age of 101 years. Anna was born to Frank and Sarah (Martens) Klassen on June 18, 1917 in the Mennonite colony of Tschajatschij, Russia. She was the youngest of five daughters. In 1924, her parents died during the typhoid epidemic, and Anna eventually was sent to live with her cousin and his wife, Peter and Anna Rempel with whom she immigrated to Canada in 1926. She then lived with her uncle and aunt, Gerhard and Helena Andres, in Rosthern. She was baptized in 1936 in Rosthern Mennonite Church by David Toews. Anna married Peter Zacharias on August 18, 1938. He died May 10, 1940. As a young widow with two small children, she married Frank Denk on April 17, 1943. Three children were born to them while they farmed in the Dundurn area. In 1952, the family moved to Saskatoon, and in 1989 Frank and Anna moved to Rosthern. Anna was devoted to her family and church. Her children and grandchildren knew they were dearly loved, and there was always an endless supply of her delicious homemade buns, cinnamon rolls, and pies in her kitchen. Spiritual nurture was an important part of Anna’s life, and she was a faithful member of the Mennonite church in Saskatoon, Martensville, and Rosthern. She was preceded in death by her husband Frank on December 17, 1995 and her daughter Margaret on January 1, 2011. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Helen Zacharias, Waldheim; son-in-law David Bueckert, Rosthern; son Douglas (Rose) Denk, Saskatoon; daughters Norma (Gary) Keister, Goshen, Indiana, and Linda (Walter) Fast, Glidden; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson. Her family is so grateful that her earthly worries are no more and she is peacefully at rest. A private family celebration of her life will be held at a later date. Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Funk’s Funeral Home, Rosthern, SK (306-232-5245, http://www.funksfuneralhome.ca)
