Helen Fisher

Obituary of Helen Fisher

March 11, 1921 – April 6, 2014 Helen Peters was born to Peter and Margareta (Wiens) Peters in Bergthal District, Rosthern, SK. Helen moved to Paraguay with her family when she was six years old, and they came back two years later because her mother became very ill there. They were never well off – but extremely poor when they came back with eight daughters. Helen could only go to Grade 8 then she went to work as a housemaid, farm worker, etc., (she could and did everything). When Mom was 18 she married Abe Hamm. They had four children. Abe passed away because of his severe asthma. Helen was left with four young children. It was a blessing Mom and Dad came from very large families—I don’t know how we would have survived without them. Helen married Clarence Fisher in 1954 (they would have been married 60 years on June 20, 2014). Mom continued to work after she was married. She was a hard worker (always had a big garden for canning and freezing veggies). Mom was an excellent baker and cook. She could make a meal for anyone if they “dropped in”. Helen and Clarence moved to PineView Manor. Helen had a stroke two months before her 89th birthday, and spent her last four years in the Nursing Home. Helen is survived by her husband Clarence Fisher, her children Hazel Hiscock, Wally (Maryann) Hamm, Carol (Robert) Stening, Colleen (Paul) Bueckert, sister Agnes Friesen, grandchildren Dale Hamm, Dean Hamm, Dallas (Sue) Hamm, Angel Currie (Warren), Barbara Hiscock (Greg), David Hiscock (Karen), Deborah Horscroft (Chris), Chris Stening, Andrea Wiebe (Cal), Shawn Wiebe, and great-grandchildren Trey and Griffin Currie, Ryan and Aiden Hiscock, Charlotte and Timothy Horscroft, A.J. Adam and Abbey Wiebe. Helen was predeceased by her first husband Abe Hamm; parents Peter & Margareta (Wiens) Peters; two sons-in-law Andy Wiebe and George Hiscock; her sisters Margaret, Marie, Anne, Jean, Eva, Sue, and Betty, and their husbands; as well as eight siblings in their infancy. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at the Rosthern Alliance Church. Interment will take place at Rosthern Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Marie Ens in Cambodia (address: Place of Rescue Foundation, Box 27096 RPO Tuscany, Calgary, AB., T3L 2Y1). Arrangements are in care of Funk’s Funeral Home, Rosthern, SK (306-232-5245, http://www.funksfuneralhome.ca).
