Obituary of Dennis Peters

August 28, 1934 – September 10, 2013 Dennis Robert Peters was born in Hepburn August 28, 1934. He was the third of four children born to Dave and Annie Peters. He spent his childhood years together with his siblings and parents on the family farm just north of Hepburn. On October 11, 1957, Dennis married Verna Neufeld and they farmed together with Dennis’s parents until his parents retired to Hepburn in 1971. Dennis and Verna and family continued on with the mixed farming operation. He also drove the fuel truck for the Hepburn Co-op until his leg was crushed in an accident in 1990, which forced him into early retirement. In 2007 they sold what remained of the family farm and moved to the Jubilee Centre in Waldheim. Dad had many interests. He enjoyed collecting axes, old cistern pumps and well pumps and end plates from old drills. He also loved working with the old machinery, especially old threshing machines and also windmills. Dad loved playing fames with his family and, in his younger years, taught them all about baseball, horseshoes and hockey, and spent many hours watching the kids play sports. The local sports centre was a big part of his life. Hunting with friends and family was his favourite hobby. He spent many falls with his sons and grandsons hunting for the big one! Dad loved living at the Jubilee Centre. He enjoyed getting together with friends, shooting a game of pool, putting puzzles together, sing-alongs, birthday parties and just coffee times. Dad battled many ailments and health issues related to cancer for the last nine years. This summer he was hospitalized in mid-August due to blood clots in his leg and stomach troubles. He became increasingly worse and had to be transferred to St. Paul’s Hospital, where he celebrated his 79th birthday on August 28th. On the 29th of August he was moved to the Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul’s Hospital. Once there he received excellent care but continued to decline. Finally on September 10th he went home to be with his Savior in heaven, with his family around him. He was predeceased by his parents, David and Annie, one sister-in-law, Bernice Peters, two brothers-in-law, Roger Neufeld and Henry Paetkau, and one daughter-in-law, Darlene Peters. He is survived by his loving wife Verna, his four children, Audrey (Dan) Peters, Jeff Peters, Doug Peters (friend Betty Barabash), Matthew Peters, and daughter-in-law Jennifer Peters; grandchildren Jordan (Jessica) Peters, Brenton (Christie) Peters, Kassandra (Michael) McCarron, Jackie Peters (Josh Teichroeb), Travis (Julie) Peters, Heather Peters, Nelson (Amanda) Peters, Myles Peters, Justin Peters and Dakota Peters; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Wally Peters and Bud (Lyn) Peters; one sister, Verna Paetkau, and one sister-in-law, Sylvia Neufeld; nine nephews and nieces. Dad was an example to us all, he had a huge heart and made everyone in his family feel special. He will be greatly missed but he will not be forgotten. A Memorial Service will be held Monday, September 16, 2013 at the Hepburn Mennonite Brethren Church with Pastor Rod Schellenberg officiating. Burial of ashes will take place in the Hepburn M. B. Cemetery. Arrangements are in care of Funk’s Funeral Home, Rosthern, SK, (306) 232-5245, http://www.funksfuneralhome.ca
