Obituary of Helen Ens

July 3, 1916 – May 7, 2015 Helen Ens of the Rosthern Mennonite Nursing Home, and formerly of Hague and Saskatoon, passed away on Thursday May 7, 2015 at the age of 98 years. She leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Marlene (Peter) Dyck of Winnipeg, Evelyn (Bill) Trost of Melville, Larry (Ruth) Ens of Winnipeg, Wes (Gwen) Ens of Rosthern, 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, also brothers: Peter (June) Dyck and George (Anne) Dyck and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Peter in 2002 and by her parents Peter and Anganetha (Sawatzky) Dyck. Helen was born in Osterwick, Russia on July 3, 1916 to Peter and Anganetha Dyck, together with her parents, Helen immigrated to Canada in 1923. Helen was baptized upon confession of faith on June 10, 1935 and joined the Hague Mennonite Church. After leaving school she worked as a Mother’s helper for various families in the Hague and Rosthern area, as well as at St. John’s Hospital in Rosthern. On October 25, 1942 she married Peter I. Ens of the Heidelberg School District. They lived in and around Hague for nearly 40 years. Helen’s focus in life was family and faith. She spent her days providing for her family; cooking, baking, sewing, gardening. She loved to read, especially her medical books, had a keen interest in geography and followed her children and grandchildren’s adventures around the world. She and Peter built a number of houses together and Helen enjoyed painting and finishing woodwork. Helen also enjoyed ministry through the Hague Mennonite Mission Helper’s and Senior Ladies Aid. Over the years she participated in music ministries as well. Helen and Peter moved to Bethany Manor in Saskatoon, in 1989. In 2002 they celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary with family, just weeks before Peter passed away. She moved to the Mennonite Nursing Home in Rosthern in July 2010, back to the community where she first lived after immigrating from the Ukraine in July 1923. The family would like to express appreciation to Helen’s friends, neighbors and caregivers over the years. Thank you for your friendship and caring. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at Hague Mennonite Church at 11:00 a.m. with Henry and Erna Funk officiating. Interment at the Hague Cemetery to follow. Arrangements are in care of Funk’s Funeral Home, Rosthern, SK.
