My Grandma Markwart

by

Dylan Markwart (at age 8 years)

My Grandma’s full name is Elsie Markwart.  She was born on February 8, 1928.  She was born 2 miles out of Rosthern and her parents were Emma and Mike Penno.  She had 7 siblings and she was the third youngest.

Grandma grew up in Rosthern and started working at a very young age.  She did a lot of chores like milking cows, feeding pigs and chickens, stooking, washing and ironing clothes, and helping with the house chores.

Grandma spoke German at home. She had a lot of pets she liked, a pet pig and a dog, a calf, 5 cats, and a magpie that they were very proud of.  Her favorite pastimes were riding the calf and sledding in winter.

Grandma went to school in Rosthern and attended it for 9 years. Her favorite subjects were arithmetic, reading, and science.  They were to shy to get into trouble because they lived on the farm.  To get to school, they had to walk 2 1/2 miles in the summer and in winter they used the horse and sleigh.  Her best friend was Lois Snider because she was their closest neighbor.

Grandma went to a Lutheran church when she was finished grade 9. She worked in a restaurant for a while, then a telephone booth for many years.  She was at a dance when she met her spouse and got married in 1948. She had 3 children.  Their names were Harvey, Larry, and Glenn.  Her favorite thing about raising children was teaching them new things and doing different things with them.

She likes to do crafts and look after Blue and I.  She would still like to do many other crafts and try many other things.  Her happiest experience was when both Blue and I were born.  Her saddest experience was the passing of her parents.

Her advice for me is to work hard at whatever I do and never say “I cant” (unless you really have to) and always try your best.

I love my grandma because she’s always happy, constantly giving and she has a good sense of humor.  She spoils us rotten. That’s why I love Grandma.
