Obituary of Gwen Hrycuik

February 8, 1943 – February 11, 2021 It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Gwen Hrycuik on February 11, 2021. Gwendlyn Jean (Groshong) Hrycuik was born to Alma and Eugene Groshong on February 8th, 1943; known as “Gwendy” to friends and family growing up and later “Gwen.” She had one younger sister, Janet, who has always been very dear to her. Gwen lived in several communities throughout her life, including Arborfield, Porcupine Plain, Prince Albert, Radville, Regina, Saskatoon and Rosthern. In 1967, she married Walter Hrycuik. They had two children, Darcy and Gena. She worked in Rosthern at the school unit and the RCMP for several years. Throughout the years they enjoyed many friendships and loved to entertain friends and invite new people into their home. Gwen was an amazing cook. Through all her years of working, she always had meals ready at noon, supper and of course many, many lunches for the field. She enjoyed music, playing piano and singing; was an avid reader, enjoyed shopping (especially for others) and had a passion for cookbooks. She was generous and thoughtful, never missed acknowledging a special occasion. She was also a longtime member of the Rosthern Lionels club. When Gwen became a grandmother, her grandchildren became her central focus. She was an amazing grandmother and friend to her grandchildren, always supporting them and interested in hearing about or attending their activities. To them, she was a best friend. Gwen was never one to complain, always cheerful and loved to share a laugh with anyone she met. Gwen leaves to mourn her: children Darcy (Lisa) Hrycuik and Gena (Kelly) Johnston; grandchildren Jack and Anna Hrycuik; Hayley, Brendan (Ashley), Sarah, Marissa and Avery Johnston; great grandson, Dodge Johnston; sister Janet (Reg) Potter; brothers and sisters-in-law Robert Hrycuik, Dorothy Hrycuik, Elsie (Gordon) Koch, and Eugene (Brenda) Hrycuik; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Walter Hrycuik; parents Eugene & Alma Groshong; in-laws, Dmytro & Polly Hrycuik; brothers and sister-in-law, Donald Hendry, John Hrycuik and Ksenia Hrycuik. A celebration of Gwen’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 26-1738 Quebec Avenue North, Saskatoon, SK S7K 2H8 or to Telemiracle, 2217C Hanselman Court, Saskatoon SK S7L 6A8.
